DEATH OF CAPTAIN STEWART.
AN INTERESTING CAREER
BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.
DUNEDIN, July 30. Captain Stewart died on Saturday morning. He had the topsail schooner Dunedin built at Dundee and sailed her out to New Zealand, his wife and daughter being on board. The Dundee traded successfully till the s.s. Tairoa came out. Upon reaching Dunedin the position of master of the ship was given to Captain Stewart. That would be about 1875 or 1876. The Tairoa was put into the Timaru trade, and Captain Stewart retained command until the vessel was sold to the Union Steam Ship Company, when he was transferred to the Beautiful Star. Shortly afterwards he was sent Home by the Harbor Board to bring out the Dredge 222. He steamed her out and had some adventures by the way in that unwieldly craft. During dirty weather in the Bay of Biscay the pumps got choked and the vessel filled. Many men would have lost her and the whole crew, but Captain Stewart, being a strong swimmer, dived into the bilgej_and got the pumps cleared. It was a feat only possible by a strong, brave man. Captain Stewart afterwards took the dredge to Melbourne and brought her back after the hiring term, He also steamed her to Wellington, and after that retired from the sea for good, and many years ago settled down to a quiet life.
