ALTON.
LPROM OUB, O\YJt COEBESPONDiINT.] ' The Ball Road footballers held a concert and dance on Wednesday night winch on the whole proved fairly successful, in spite of the deplorable rowdyism winch prevails at ail these gatherings. It is most uncomplimentary to the performers and inconsiderate to those wishing to listen to the various items the way a number of "smart" young 'fellows talk and laugh during the rendering of each item, and, what is more surprising, these hoodlums are mostly sons of our most respected settlers. The local committees find a great difficulty in getting outside talent to help with their concerts. At one time performers were very willing to come from Hawera andVPatea, but now as soon as Alton is mentioned a great many refuse oil the grounds that common courtesy is refused them by the audience.. I have refrained from mentioning anything of this in my previous notes, hoping to see an improvement, but on. tiie contrary affairs are getting from bad to worse, and it is higii time that extreme measures were taken and a few prosecutions followed. Until there is something of this sort done I am sadly afraid order will not be restored. The following ladies and gentlemen contributed items:—Miss Hodge, Messrs Bowditch, Ramsbottom, Holtham, Curteis, Baylie, and Master Taylor and Miss Hurley, all of which, ,with one exception, were encored. After the concert Mr G. V: Pearce (chairman), in a few well-chosen words, , thanked the performers and mentioned ■ that the hall would be cleared for dancing, which was indulged in until "the wee small hours of the morning.
