WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the above was held on Thursday evening, there being present: Messrs F. Pirani (chairman), E. Dixon, A. Fraser, F. TVI. Spurdle, F. Purnell, J. P. Aldridge and D. H. Guthrie, M.P. Leave of absence was granted to Mr P. O'Dea.

Finance. —The bank balances reported were: General account, cr. £6447 15s Id, building account, cr. £695 7s lOd; Land sales, dr. £4C2 16s Id; Manual and Technical Account, dr. £3598 15s 4d; Bank balance, cr. £4363 lls Id. Resignation.—E. I. Henn (Fraser road).

Leave of Absence.—Leave of absence was granted to: M. Hunsen (Te Roti), one month; E. King (Kaponga), one month. Correspondence regarding the transfer of Miss Horneman from Mosstown to Mangatoki were referred to the Inspector.

The Manaia, Normanby, Opaku, Meremere, Taihape and Raetihi schools ar« closed owing to epidemics. The Kakararaea residence and Kai Iwi school have been placed on the list for paintisg.

The Board declined to make a grant for making a tennis court at Matapu. The Board decided that learning music was not a-ground for exemption" from school.

The Waimate West County Council has forwarded a cheque for the amount guaranteed for salary of secondary assistant at Manaia last year. . An application for the erection of a new school at Patea was deferred till next meeting.

Desks are to be supplied to Ohangi. The Chief Inspector's report was adopted. .' . ""

Eight applications for transfer were referred to the Inspector. Reporting on a suggestion by the Commandant of Cadets re physical instruction, Mr Purnell said he considered the proposal an important one. Afcer Easter it was proposed to organise classes of teachers for science and agriculture at Wanganui and Palmerston N., and there was no reason why physical instruction should not be included. He recommended that the Board advise the Commandant that it was in sympathy with his proposal, and that the Chief Inspector be asked to suggest times and dates for classes. Mr Purnell also recommended that if teachers were prepared to devote the last week of their summer holidays for the purpose of attending annual camp, the Board would, where possible, favorably entertain applications from teachers for leave of absence during the first school week of the year for this purpose. He had no recommendation to make as to the desirability of limiting physical training in the schools to free exercises without apparatus. The' Board did not accept any tender for the Meremere residence.
