NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 27. _ In the course of a speech this evening, the Premier announced, amidst applause, that he had just received news that the iron industry would be established m the Dominion within a year, which would be a big thing for JNew Zealand, arid particularly for this district, owing to the extensive deposits of ironsand. In passing he made feeling reference, which was greeted with a tumult of applause, to the energy and enthusiasm of the late Mr E. M Smith, MR for Taranaki, who had done so much in the interest of the ironsand industry during the whole of his lifetime and who kept it prominently m the foreground both in New Zealand and out of it.
