ARARATA SPORTS.
The initial gathering under the aus- j pices of the Ararata Athletic Club was held on Monday. The fixtmre was originally set down for March 9, but this date proved unfavorable to those most concerned (officials and competitors), and the sports were put off to the following Friday. On that day the j weather was so bad that another post- | ponement to Monday, the 14th, was arranged. Unfortunately, the weather 1 was a^ain disappointing. The officials, ! however, enthusiastic to a degree, proceeded with their programme. Competitors also displayed keen interest, acceptances being good in view of the weather that prevailed, and they battled gamely against the adverse conditions, there being heavy going, a strong wind, and at times heavy rain. Needless to remark, the spectators received a soaking, but this did not appear to lessen their interest in the proceedings. Twenty events, chiefly footracing, were contested. Of these the running events produced some hard racing, there being a number of close finishes. D. Roberts, of Okaiawa, won four of the short distance races. In the horse jumping contest the winner put up a good performance. Of the field events the one in which the competitors tried to take a wheelbarrow (when blindfolded) to a certain point, was most supported, there being fortythree entrants, among whom a number of lady patrons tested their ' judgment. This event provided some amusement for the onlookers, in which disappointed competitors invariably joined when they found out that they had been steering in the wrong direction. The cub had a substantial income by way of members' subscriptions and donations, also the nominations were good ; •id it was regrettable that the b^d weather cut off a source of revenue in f>;ate receipts, which would otherwise have given the club a good start.
