DAMAGE IN NELSON.

NELSON, March 15. A heavy north-westerly gale with high spring tides caused the highest sea on the city foreshore for many years. Tho Port road and part of Washington Valley wore under water, and it is believed considerable damage has been done at .the port. Some boats aro rescuing poultry and removing goods. The water washed over Halifax, near tho centre of the city, right to the foot of tho new post office. The heavy rain is now clearing, though the gale is still raging. The water is two feet over the wharf at Motueka. In South Taranaki a strong wind blew in the morning, but as the day wore on it became less boisterous. Some heavy rain fell about 5 o'clock.
