POSITION IN CHRISTCHURCH
CHRISTCHURCH, July 22. A deputation numbering about twenty waited ©n the Mayor and out forward their claims for work. His Worship stated that the Council was doing its utmost with the funds at its command, anl was at present spending £-500 a month on labor. If this rate of expenditure were maintained for six months, heavy rates would have to be levied to make up the deficiency. He advised the deputation to bring more pressure to bear on the local members of Parliament in order to get a Government subsidy.
As a result of representations made to the Mayor by the Rev. J. MacKenzie and Mr Frank Rule, representing the Presbyterian Social Service Association, the Mayor has decided to call a meeting of representatives of all the agencies in this city engaged in finding relief for unemployed, either by fretting them work or by giving them direct assistance. The fact that different institutions and people are engaged 071 the same work, but are not acquainted with what each other is doing, has probably led to some cases receiving much more assistance than was warranted by circumstances, whilst more deserving cases have not received any assistance. It is hoped that some workable scheme providing for concerted action on the part of the various agencies at work will be evolved.
