AUCKLAND, July 20. The Salvation Army Shelter is always a guide to the state of the unemployed difficulty here. For the last 14 days "fourpenny bods" to the number of 702 were paid for by those engaging them: 171 were supplied to "stone broke" wanderers of the night in return for labor ; 128 were filled by the benrers of orders from good Samaritans ; whilst no fewer than 111 men were provided with a comfortable night's repose without money and without price of any kind. This niakas a total of 1112 "fourpennies" filled during the 14 days.
"Last winter," said Staff-Cantain Toomer, "we were full up, but it did not last long; but this year we have been like this for four months."
"What about meals?"
"Well, here is our record for the two weeks : 314 meals at Id eack, 209 at 2d, 84 at 3d, and 83 at 4d. In return for labor vre have supplied 543 meals for the fortnight, 166 have been furnished on orders, whilst there have been 69 absolutely free meals. There was thus a total number of 1568 meals ranging in value from Id to 4d."
