SUPREME COURT.
PALMERSTON, March 5.
John Moughan and Susan Colo, for ailicged attempted abortion upon Agnes Moughan about the 20th, , July, last, were acquitted om toe ground that theire wias no diwet evidence to attach tfhem to the crime. , Thomas John Lesley, aged 33, was charged with on the 18th February carnally knowing his edght-year-old daughter at PoDgaroa, and also with indecent assault The jury, after threo-qiiaarters of an hour's retirement, returned a verdict of guilty on both charges PALMERSTON N., March 6.
At the Supreme Court this morning Thomas John Lesley, found guilty last night of attempting to, carnally know and indecently assaulting his eight-year-old daughter, was put forward for sentence. His Honor Mr Justice Chapman, in pass ing sentence, saad prisoner had been guilty of one of the grossest offences known to the law, and would be sentenced to the maximum allowed by the Legislature, seven years, but would be spared the degradation of the lash. Tre Court is now hearing a charge of attempted arson against Mr* Jane Martin.
INVERCARGDLL, March 5
Orimir-al business was continued at the Supreme Court to-day. Richard Lloyd, charged with unlawfully shooting a cow, and John Keating and Patrick Finn, charged with assaulting and robbing John Devanney, wero all found guilty. In the former case the Judge expressed regret that the jury had been occupied so long on so trivial a» matter.
