HAWERA HIGH SCHOOL.

' ANNUAL BEUNION

The annual High School reunion took place on Thursday evening. There were about 200 present, including pupils and 'expupils from various, places in the district. Miss Poynter occupied the chair.

. The headmaster (Mr Strack), in welcoming the pupils, pointed oat tlhat friendships formed at school wexe lasting and endearing. He said the past year had only been on ordinary one, but the number of pupils at the High. School was more than ever, and there had been an increase in the teaching staff. He announced that Master G. Morgan had been awarded a science scholarship.

The following programme was then taken :Club swinging, senior girfo^ piano solo, Miss May Atis; dialogue (Cassdus and Brutus), Misses Emma Murbag'h and Mia Villara; song, Mr W. Hutchens; ohestinuts, Mr Strack; song, Miss McLeod; pianoforte duet, Miss Bdti and Master Con Strack; recitation. Mr Niven; piano solo. Miss Sybil Hamilton.

After this games were indulged in and the science and art rooms were thrown open to the visitors. The mysteriec of the science room were 'arranged for inspection, and Mr Niven (science master) was in attendance. The works in the art room were wry attractive, and reflected credit on the artistic taste and abilities of the pupils and the teaching of their tutor (Mr Richairdson). In the large hall a number of drawings and paintings of original design were on view. There were also five very fine paintings by Mrs G. Guy (lent for the occasion) } two being of Mount Egmonfc.

In the afternoon collections of flowers had been taken to the school, the children competing as to who could, bring the best bouquet. The flowers were used for decorative purposes in the evening. Following are the results of the competitions: —

2. Standard ll— Theodore Smith 1. Mary Hutcheson 2.

Standard III— L. Xolan 1, I. P&mngton 2.

Standard. IV— Dorothy Bates 1, Hilda Aiben 2.

Standard V— Winnie Paierson 1, Marie Bobbins 2.

Standard VI — A. Raine 1. Mab Hunter 2. Seniors — May Aws 1. Muriel Morecraft 2.

The evening, which was very enjoyable,

was concluded with, supper and fhe singing of "Auld Lang Syne>." Concluding cheers were gwien tor Mar and Mrs Strack. All scholars at the District High School were on Thursday assembled in the central hall, where lessons were given on Empire Day and the scholars saluted tihe flag in accordance with the regulations.

The Hawera Mounted R ; fles will go into camp for a week at Manaia, in July, for their annual training.

A number of old age pensions were granted this morning by Mr A. Turnbull, S.M. Several were only renewed after rery searching . enquiry. An old couple who were both applying for renewals had the question of tihieir sobriety gonte into very fully, but were "given another chance.'
