The Mayor apologised for the absence of Cr Whittington,. who was indisposed. BILLIARD LICENSE REFUSED. Mr L. Joseph applied for a billiard , saloon license.. Constable Potter reported . unfavorably on the room as conducted by the applicant. Cr Sargeson moved, That the application be not entertained. Cr Wilson seconded. — Carried. A GRIEVANCE RENEWED. 1 The followingl letter,' dated' April 7, ■ was received from Mr Wi Martin, Kapuni: — "I have had no reply to my letter of 16th. ult., but I see some one has been' cutting into the west, bank of the .ford' referred to in my last letter, endeavorin? to make; a. crossing (I presume with instructi<ons from yojur Council). I am very particular not to cut into the banks, 1 as it is only inviting the stream there by (widening the river-bed Before any of I your workmen do anything towards restor1 ing the crossing 1 shall expect you to- ar--ra/ige with, me as to what is to be done. The work- that has been done now is simply thrown away. I shall be away from home for about a month, consequent'ly'it had' better lie over till I return.", 1 The following is another letter received from the same source, dated March 15: — j "The ford across the Kapuni. -stream on my property, which was destroyed by the ! contractors, working at the. tunnel, of; your ' water, supply, of, which I wjjgte to, you j iwke in January feat, has. .no.t.ibeen T re- ■ stored. I cannot understand^ why the ford has not been restored, as I was confidently assured by Mr Robbins, also the engineer for the work, that it would be attended to without delay. By being unable to take a dray,, across, the ford, I had to get my grass; see<J y pac.lses ap.roes the river, costing 30s,' which)' 'amount I now look to 1 the Council for." The Mayor said that the contractors were asked to put the ford in order, ,. or th* Council 1 wqjtldid© ifrat^tlhel& expense. He said 'the -ford was beffer- than it ' waa.before^ the. contractors interfered with it, and remarked : "You could wheel a barrow through the centre oiit." The Mayor, said the work had to be done to, Mr Martin's satisfaction, and the unfortunate part was that Mr Martin waß . not there at the time the work was done by the Council's men. He explained that j tiw boulders had been placed in • such a way that whenever a fresh came a '.'scoop- . out" resulted at the ford. I Cr Wilson, said that.it seemed -to him t that whatever was done Mr Martin would ! not consider it satisfactory, and he thought he should be notified by lejbter that the 1 Borough ■ Foreman considered the ford " a •• good one: I Or Morrisfiey said- that. IHe suggested sending men but 5 ' to do" the j work under Mr Martin's; snp^rviskou I The- Mayor: Hear, htear. r ' I Cr Pacey: Oh, I object to that. WATER SERVICE. Messrs Hurrell Bros, applied to have a larger connecting pipe for their water service, as they wanted to make a water blast.
