As the train slowed down t. approaching the platform the passengers J experienced a heavy jolt, and on the train being pulled up it was found that the * ■engine was off the line and three of the j Itoding cars were also derailed, the rails \ being bent and spread very badly. ' «J The .occupants of the leading car had a narrow escape, and it is certain but for the driver's prompt action in applying the Westinghouse brake something serious would have happened. 3 Two people were sitting on the' platform, and were pitched off the car to the side of the track, while a Tad sitting in the corner next the- door had his leg , grazed by the sharp end of a point of the ' * rail which had pierced through the floor - •and seat of the car, curving round in front of the lad. The other occupants ■? escaped with nothing worse than & ■fright. i The jengioe was badly damaged, including a pair of wheels and axles, which were wrenched oft" and were subsequently , found under the middle of the leading , car in the gravel. The ballasting was . ploughed up for a distance of 40 yards. | A relief train and a gang oi men were : sent from 'VVanganui, and arrived at 5 , o'clock, the passengers eventually reach- , ing here at 6.20 a.m. - j
