ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

A general meeting of the Eltham Tradesmen's Association' was held in the Oddfellows' Hall last night. There was .not a very large attendance of members. Mr C. A. Wiikinson (President) occupied the chair and explained that the principal objects of the meeting were,(l) To discuss the advisability of having clause 21 of the Shops and Offices Act brought into force thereby fixing the hours of closing for all shops within the borough; (2) To hear the roport of the delegates at the Conference held in Eltham last week. The Chairman said he considered it was desirable that all shops within the borough should close at a uniform hour. At Stratford and Inglewood the ' hours of closing had been fied for 5.30 p.m in the winter and 6 p.m. iv summer for ordinary business days, and 9 p.m. in summer aud 10 o'clock in winter on Saturdays. At Hawera ithe hours were 6 p.m. on* ordinary days and 10 p.m. on Saturadys. After discussion Mt Scrivfiner moved, "That the Executive Committee be. (requested to have a petition prepared and circulated, requesting thes Minister for Labor to bring Eltham -within Section 21 of the Shops and Offices Act and that the .hours of dosing be 5.30 in winter and 6 p.m. in summer during the week and 9 p.m. in winter and 9.30 p.m. in summer on Saturdays. - Mr Gooder second -id the .motion and it was carried unanimously. Messrs Wilkinson, Carman and Hill reported progress of the recent Conference of delegates (which has' already appeared in these columns). Mr McHardy moved, "That this Association supports the formation of a Hetailers' Provincial Executive. — Seoondad by Mr Quin. and carried. Mr Hill moved, "That the contribution of this Association, to tlw Provincial Association should \>i a euoi not £5 for the first year. This was e^onded by Mr F. C. Davsffom and carried.
