WHOLE DISTRICT SWEPT.
FLAMES TRAVEL FASTER THAN
MAIL TRAIN.
MANY FARMERS BURNT OUT.
THOUSANDS OF SHEEP PERISH
[PBBSS ASSOCIATION.! (Received January 22, 9.52 a.m.) SYDNEY,- January 22. The whole district between Corowa and Culcairn has been swept by a bueh fire, which is supposed to have originated :n: n a spaTk from a 'pipe or a match thrown down by a farm employee. The fire, under the influence of a bliftering hot wind, spread with marvelloiis rapidity. At one point the flames beat the mail train.
Fortunately most of the wheat had been harvested, but the damage to stock, crops and gra66 is heavy.
Wool sheds, machinery and b'uilding6 were swept away, and a. great many small farmers burnt out, while at Brae Springs Station two thousand sheep perisfied. At Gerogery West station, ten thousand acres were swept and twelve hundred 6heep burnt. The fire was subdued at Culcairn.
