MR MAJOR AT OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent 1
Mr C. E. Major had a very large meeting here on Friday evening on the occask a of his address to the electors. The chair was taken by Mr Dudley (Chairman of Town Board). The speaker dealt with political questions in general and matters affecting this district more particularly, the land question and the 'railway being chief. He also quoted statistics, and made out a good case for the Government administration, and several questions were satisfactorily answered. As regards the railway to Opunake, Mr Major would not make any catch promises, but said he had good reason to believe that if we returned the Government candidate the railway would be under way in two to three years, and that the route would almost be sure to be the present reserved one.
Mr Moore proposed a vote of thanks and confidence in Mr Major, also confidence in the Government. In speaking to the motion Mr Moore said that Mr Major was the best working member we have had since Sir Harry Atkinson, who was, of course, a Minister, and had special advantages.
Mr Guy seconded tne motion, and .said he considered the address that evening the best that had been delivered in the hall. The motion was carried by acclamation, and a vote of thanks concluded the meeting.
