SCHOOL CONCERT.

-There was -a crowded attendance at the Opera lfouseon ,Friday evening, when a very excellent concert was given in aid -of the 'piano fund and for improvements "to the school grounds by the pupils of theHawenTDistiict High School. If the programme had a failing it was its great length." _T)ie . stage had been extended "for the occaMoru-thus affording ample room for, the movements of the scholars. The action-songs, rounds, etc.. by the scholars were splendidly rendered, and tne absence of confusion in getting from 50 to 60 children on to -the stage and off again reflected I great-credit on the teachers. Recitations by_Olnrice "Huyrell. Bathia Stoart. RicharU B rough, and Leigh Treadwell were warmly applauded? and the clever blackboard sketching , of" Jack Sargent and Ruanui elicited rounds of applause. The dumbbell exercises, flag-signalling. Indian club -exercises^ and military and physical drill "Verc all most enjoyable. A very inspirit'insr" eft Vet was provided by the rendition of the >re\\rZealand Cadets' song and chorus. ,"Ten_ little nigger lxiys" created roni's of laughter. — Miss Taia Strack sang "Gonnod!s Serenade." and "April Mom." and was recalled for both songs. A similar -compliment was paid to Mr W. llutchens, who played Musin's Mazurka. The debate. Town 1 v. Country, was an interesting and skilful contribution to the programme, and was much appreciated. An "exhibition on the parallel bars by the gymnasium class wa's good. The grand march -was the final "turn." and the movements were capitally executed. Kathleen Fairhall. who"played the overture, also made a very skilful accompanist. At the conclusion of the programme Rev. Treadwell, on beha]f_of the School Committee, warm-ly-thanked Mr. Strack and his Jissistants ~for the work they had undertaken in training the scholars, who had done so -well.- The remarks were greeted with, applause, and -subsequently many took occasion to' congratulate the teaching staff upon the great success which had rewarded their efforts.
