Hawera

Stratford

O» Thursday at Palmcrston North the. Huaki (Hawera) hockey girls played the Craven jPalnierston) team, and were defeated by 3 goals to 1. Mies P. Baird scored for Hawera. } Small girls, tall girls, round' girls and slender girls, muscular girls and little slips of girls gathered round the hockey field at the show grounds on Friday, emitting a strange medley of sounds which might possibly l)e translated into the cries of "Hawera," or again "Napier." The game they witnessed was exciting, too, for never a moment was the small white ball at ease while llawke's Bay and Hawera did royal battle together. Flanking movements culminating in centering tactics were brilliantly executed. So well did they of the red banner wage their fight that ere long two good goals were to their credit. Then for a space did peace prevail, but ere long the herald gave the signal for the renewal of the combat. Napier continued to show that they were atop of the fray, and smacked two more of the much desired ones. Tiring of the role of sport providers, blues slashed their sticks to such good effect that for a full ten minutes Napier were so uncomfortable that two goals were scored against them. Nor yet did the combat lessen its fierceness, for bravely did the champions of the red and blue struggle for one more goal. Then the whistle sounded and the warriors retired to their afternoon tea, beaten, tired, but satisfied withal. — Mauawatu Daily Times.

On Saturday the Huaki team met the Wauganui girls team at Wanganui, and were again beaten, Wanganui 1, Hawera 0 being the score.
