HAWERA WATER SUPPLY.

AFFECTED BY THE FLOOD.

Early on Saturday it was obvious, owing to tho poor pressure of water, that there was sometliing wrong at the headworks of the Hawera water supply.

Mt Ogilvie, the Borough foreman, lost no time m getting to the intake, and comimuiced investigations early on Saturday afternoon. It was soon apparent that a serious block had boom caused somewhere along the pip© line, and ho collected all tho niun availablo and at daylight on Sunday morning .had a-gang of fiv© experienced shovellers working zealously. In order to get at the pipes the men had to dig down,' in most cases, about eight feet. When the. pipe was reached a hole was made in it to ascertain, if the channel wap blocked above or below that particular point. By tapping in this way at intervals along the line the immediately.affected area was reduced to a couple of chains.

The Mayor (Mr Ilobbins) and Cr Sargeson believing that matteiis were becoming serious, proceeded to the headworks on Sunday afternoon, but could suggest no improvement on the borough foreman's arrangements. The flood, which carried the foreign ma,ttcr into the channel is the biggest experienced' for two yeans, and almost washed away the bank protecting the temporary inlet. Had this bank been washed away, it would have been a very serious occurwsnoe, and there would have been no water for at least a fortnight, and the trouble would not have ended there. Foirtunate'y tlie bank was preserved and danger i 6 now past. Between 10 and 11 o'clock on Sunday night the water came through, but the pressure was low. It is confidently expected, however, that the pressure will be j incrcrad during to-day. A jpeat quantity of silt lias lodged inthe pipes and it cannot be expected that the water will 'be very clean for a few days. In a fortnight's time *he contractors expect to be co far advanced as to be ablo to inßtal the .automatic valve, and there will then be no danger of a repetition of the event that has just occurred. Tho blockage in the pipes has been located at a distance of aboiut-two chains from, tho intake, and the removal of the obstruction is only a matter of a little time. Meanwhile" the supply of water is sufficient fcr. all domestic purpose*.", " . .
