A SAD AFFAIR.
Quite a sensation was caused in Hawera this morning when it became known that George Lake, a middle-aged man who for some years was employed as confidential clerk to Mr C. E. Major, M.H.8., had committed suicide. It was reported a lew days ago that deceased was in trouble "t some sort, and it now transpires th<»; he then threatened to end his lijfe. It is understood that deceased was home at 4 o'clock this morning, and at 5 hit body was found alongside the Tawhiti road. In his right hand a revolver wa* clenched, with the thumb across the trigger. The revolver end had evidently been placed* in the mouth, and the bullet ploughed upwards through the skull and carried away the tweed cap deceased was wearing. This lay about five yards away with the twisted bullet inside.
Deceased leaves a widow and family of young children. An inquest will be held to-morrow.
