PORT ARTHUR.
JAPANESE ASSAULTS REPULSED.
LONDON, October 1.
The Russian General's Staff's news from Port Arthur states that all assaults from the 20th to the 26th September were repulsed.
A JUNK CAPTURED.
LONDON, October 2. The Japanese captured a junk with despatches from Port Arthur, and detained two Russians. '
GOLDEN HILL FORTS ALMOST DESTROYED.
(Received October 3. 8.50 a.m.) LONDON, October 2. Chefoo reports state that the Golden Hill forts are almost destroyed by shells. Japanese efforts are concentrated on this position.
EXPLANATIONS FOR RECENT SORTIE.
LONDON, October 2.
It is reported at St. Petersburg that Wiremu's short sortie was to ascertain the value of the recently repaired vessels at Port Arthur.
Another view is that the increased hail of projectiles in the harbor, owing to the Japanese recent success, is compelling the ships to move.
INTENSE SUFFERING FROM THIRST.
LONDON, October 2. A junk which ran the Port Arthur blockade, reports intense suffering in the town through lack of water.
