SUICIDE.

DUNEDIN, September 50. Henry Jones committed suicide at Palmerstou by shooting himself. It appears he suffered from pains about tiic back of his head which prevented him from sleeping. He complained of these pains to a groom at a hotel, and reminded tho latter that it was time to go to breakfast. During the groom's absence Jones fixed up a double-barreled gun and discharged it by lueans of a string attached to the trigger, the shot blowing away a considerable portion" of l\\fi head. Jones was a groom, and last year was in charge of one of tho Government stud horses. He was about 50 years of age. At the inquest a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane was returned.

EDUCATION CONFERENCE.

DUNEDIN, September 30. A conference was held to-night between executives of me School Committees Conference and the local branch of the Educational Institute. Resolutions were passed strongly urging upon the Government the necessity for passing legislation without delay to provide for superannuation for teachers, and also that in the event of the scale of teachers' salaries as a wholo not being amended during the present session the Government be urged to place a sum of money to be allocated to the purpose of increasing tne present inadequate salaries of male assistants other than first assistants.

THE PREMIER.

Tho Premier and party left for Ureymouth this morning. The Premier expressed great satisfaction at the nianner the celebration was carried out. The attendance from all parts of the Coast exceeded expectations. The Premier states that ho feels much better than for some time past.

NAPIER BURGLARY.

NAPIER, October 1.

Tho police have effected a smart capture by arresting Chas. H. Newton, alias Murray, and Chas. Ross, at Wainiarama, yesterday, on a charge of implication in the burglary at .Hannah's.

MISCELLANEOUS.

ASHBURTON, September 30. A meeting of ratepayers to-night passed a motion requesting the Borough Council to take a poll on a proposal to raise £15,000 to purchase the Ashburton gas works. The motion was carried by 22 votes to 12.

WAIROA (H. 8.), September 30. Benjamin Tfiorpe was committed for jtrial for stealing a cash box and stamps from a store. Harry Robinson, alias - Rayo, was also committed for breaking a into a hut owned by Thos. Hagan, a fisher- tl man, at Mahia, and stealing several ar- a tides.
