LATE WAR NEWS.
« NEW ZEALANDERS SUFFER HEAVILY. TWO OFFICERS AND EIGHTEEN MEN KILLED. FIVE OFFICERS AND THIRTYTHREE MEN WOUNDED.
Received February 28, 9.33 a.m. London, February 27. Renter states that Alberts and Ross, two of the Bothas, and some Transvaalers, totalling seven hundred, attempted to cross between Colonels Byng's and Rimington's columns on the Vrede-Bothasberg line to the northwards. The brunt of the fighting fell on Colonel Garrett's New Zealanders, who, by superb valour, defeated the attempt,, but lost two officers and eighteen men killed, and five officers and thirty-three wounded. The Boers abandoned one hundred horses and six thousand cattle. The Boers first goaded a herd of cattle to a gallop, but Che Now Zealandera shot twenty, which had the effect of checking th'a rest. From behind the cover of the dead cattle and horses the Boers maintained a heavy fire till repulsed. A few escaped. Hans Botha and Main Botha were amongst the most determined fighters.
