AERIAL NAVIGATION.

M. Santos Dumont, the aeronaut, is experimenting in aerial navigation at Monaco. While making his fifth ascent the gas escaped, and the balloon fell into the sea and sank. Dumont was rescued.
THE MEAT CONTRACTS.
London, February 14.
In connection with tbe army meat contracts, the newspaper Truth declares that Bergl's Australian interests are a myth, and asserts that .he 1b simply a middleman to Houlder Bros., the Federal Steam Navigation Company, and De Beers Consolidated Mineß Company.

London, February 16.
In the House of Commons, Viscount Cranboroe, Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, said Lord Pauncefote. British Ambassador at Washington, at the verbal suggestion of his diplomatic colleagues in Washington, convened a meeting of ambassadors for April 14th, 1898, The British Governrnent had been informed thac Lord Pauncefote proposed that a collective Note would be injudicious, and that Great Britain would take no action. The Government was not aware then of the views of Germany.
Tbe Washington correspondent of The Times states that Lord Pauncefote and Baron Holleben were the only ambassadors at the meeting not hot for intervention. Lord Pauncefote tried moderate views on his colleagues.
STRIKE IN AUSTRIA.
Vienna, February 16. A general strike has occurred amongst the workmen at Trieste. Mobs paraded the streets, and smashed windows. The military were called out, and fired at the rioters, lolling eight and wounding many.

COMPANY DIRECTORS SENTENCED.
Berlin, February 16. Herr Herman Sumpt, a director of. the TrebertrocknungCo., which recently failed for large liabilities, has been sentenced to seven months' imprisonment, and other directors to lesser terms, for concealing the state of affairs of the company.
