KAPONGA.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

The ceremony of unfurling the flag on Monday last, at the public school, brought together a large number of settlers and parents. Unfortunately, your correspondent could not attend, therefore he is hot able to give a full report of proceedings. Patriotic speeches were delivered by Mr McGuire, M.H.E., Mr J. Bobertson (chairman of the School Committee), Mr L. May (member of the Committee), and Mr B. C. Bobbins (member of Education Board), who arrived on the scene when proceedings were almost conoluded. The honor of hoisting the flag fell to Mrs J. Robertson. After photographing the oompany and School Committee, etc., tho company partook of afternoon tea supplied by the Committee, during which Mr Maolean, the master, was presented with a gold watch chain subscribed for by tho Committee as a slight mark of appreciation. Mr Maclean feelingly and suitably responded, after which the company dispersed.

The meeting called for the discussion of rules, etc., of the proposed Eaponga Literary and Social Club was wall attended on Tuesday last. The rules as drafted were adopted, and the following officebearers were appointed :— President, Mr F. W Wilkie; secretary, Mr A. M. Campbell ; committee, to consist of three ladies who are to be elected at next meeting, and three gentlemen, the following being selected by ballot, Messrs Baigent, Holdaway, and Harvey. The quarterly subscription was fixed at 2s 6d for gentlemen, ladies free. A social meeting of the club is to be held on Tuesday, 25th inst, when a programme of mnsio and games, with a service of tea, will be provided. The Settlers' Association monthly meeting on Monday evening last adjourned on account of the small attendance to Monday, 17th inst.

Owing to the heavy rain on Friday night, the cricket match Star v. Eaponga, arranged for Saturday, had to be postponed.
