CHEVALIER AND THE REPORTERS.
Mr Chevalier made a professional visit to America some eight or nine years ago, and met there with a very cordial reception. Naturally ho was welcomed by the American journalist. One of his first meetings, indeed, the morning after his arrival in New York, well illustrates the pushing methods of the Yankee reporter.
On tho night of my arrival (writes Mr Chevalier), I was tired out. I tumbled into bed and slept like a top. My sitting, bed, and bathroom were on the same floor. The following morning, when I was in my bath, I heard somebody apparently moving the furniture about in the sittingroom. I put my head out of the bathroom door, and, to my amazement, saw two gentlemen busily engaged in screwing together a photographic camera stand.
I was too staggered to say anything, but they courteously put me at my ease by informing me they represented the New York (a newspaper). They were deputed to call with the object of obtaining three photographs of me, depicting the following emotions: Surprise, Joy, and Disgust.
I told them that I should have some difficulty in supplying the middle one, but the other two I had on hand. "You are too good," was the answer. "Don't hurry— continue your ablutions. We'll wait till you're dry." The photos were taken, and In due course published. I had a frantic struggle about the second, but they declined to go until I placed my "joy" on record.
