Auckland, February 8. The Devonporfc Coastguard Artillery have offered the Government two qualified Maxim gun detachments for the Ninth Contingent.
Auckland, February 7. The master of the coastal vessel Torea was before the Stipendiary Magistrate at the Police Court to answer a somewhat singular charge, viz., that on or about December 11th last, at Auckland, he, being the master of a foreigngoing ship, going to sea from the port •of Auckland, did fraudulently engage one Alfred Harris, a dulyqualified engineer, to serve on tbe said ship for tho purpose only of enabling the said ship to clear, and not for the purpose of the whole voyage. It was stated that the case in question was the firat one laid under section 28 of subsection 3 of the Shipping and Seamen's Act, 1877. His Worship imposed a fine of £10 and costs.
A boarding-house at Eowick was burned to the ground. Tbe house belonged to Harry Kerr, and was insured for £175. Bosanco (the occupier) will lose about £50 on the furniture.
