LAND VALUATION.

(per press association.)

Christoh;urch, February 7. A deputation of the New Zealand Farmers' Union from the North and South Island waited on Mr John McGowan, the official head of the Valuation Department. The latter said his endeavor was to make the values of land as level as possible. If an amending bill was brought down, he would suggest one assessor be selected by the local bodies. He could not give rebate on lands the revenue from which was derived from wool, and which the deputation alleged had decreased in value owing to the low prices of wool. The only way he could do it was to re-value the whole district, and he did not think any serious fall in values had yet taken place.
