A " FAKED " AGREEMENT.

Christchorch, January 22.

When the Ariadne case was resumed this morning, Me Stringer intimated that the Crown had had proved to them beyond reasonable doubt by their scientific adviser, Dr Chilton, that tho incriminating agreement between Kerry and Mumford had been " faked." The main part of the agreement had been traced over, and incriminating words added. Under the circumstances, he asked that the agreement, as against Kerry and Freke, be withdrawn from the jury. As the agreement was tlis only evidence against Freke, the Crown did not propose to proceed further a^iunst that prisoner. The jury by direction of the Judge found a verdict of not guilty against Freke. His Honor discharged him from custody', expressing regret at the inconvenience he had been subjected to.
