The first service in the new Anglican Church i St. Mark's) took' place on Thursday evening last, when the Beating accommodation was fully taxed. The church is a handsome building, ibe nave being 3'dii by 19ft, with a wall stud of life, the fuJl height being 25ft from the . floor to ridge board, the ceiling being neatly finished with 1 dressed timber and two principals. The lighting of v the building has been well looked after, there being a triple window in the east end, aud three on each side, all with Gothic heads, and the west or front end two Gothic head windows, and oue inullioned, all being of fancy glass. For ventilation, the side windows are hinged at the bottom, and fitted with Preston's patent screw adjustments. The seats are handsome aud comfortable; the inside walls, though not lined at present, were decorated with flowers and palms, and looked very nice. The architects were Messrs Clere and Swan, of Wellington, aud the builder Mr J. Eobertson, of Kaponga, who may justly bo proud of his good workmanship throughout, the painting being done by Mr A. Franklin, of Manaia. Three reverend gentlemen conducted the service, the opening, portion being by the Rev. Comptcfa^ who stated that the total cost of the church at present had been £200, of which £100 had been raised by subscriptions and entertainments, leaving a debt of £100. Lessons were read by Rev McConael, of Eltham, and an address by Rev. Anson, of Hawera, concluded an interesting and enjoyable evening. The offertory, which was in aid of the building fund, amounted to close on £8, and the committee hope to further decrease the debt by holding a social on Thursday next, when it is to be hoped a full house will bethe result. The ladies of .Kaponga are providing the refreshments, and a good floor and music for dancing is assured.
