Cowern will hold an important land sale at Fatea to-morrow. Ex-Judge Martin has informed a friend in Christohurch that as soon as " the little Eoandal " had blown over, hk intended returning to Christchurch with a view to setting up business again. Land continues to rise in value in Southland. A block of an acre and threequarters of good land in Liniehills township, offered at Invercargill at an upset of £17 10s, ran up to £110 15s, at whioh price it was purchased. A record, in the nature of n " bad preeminence," was made at a school orioket match in Feilding the other day, when a side was put out for one run. This re- ! doubtable team did relatively much better : at the second attempt, but even then their score was bat 9. Dr Logan Campbell, who i<t to be elected ! Mayor of Auckland for the period including | the Duke of York's visit, went to Auckland ! before the site of the city was chosen. His office stands now where his tent stood I in 1840, the land having been purchased at the first Government sale. He was for a term Superintendent of the province of | Auckland ; he was one of the first members of the city in the House of Representatives, and also at one time was elected for Parnell. Colonel Morgan Crofton, D.5.0.. who is in command of the Eastern military district dating the absence on leave of General Gatacre, has ordered the abolition of the fringe or forelock, so popular with Tommy. He says it is disfiguring and unsoldierly, and has ordered commanding officers to hold bare-headed parades with a view to the detection of fringes.
The Minister of Lands admits, after a ] tour through a portion of the North Island, ] that the chief requirement is good roads. j The tender of Mr Lloyd, Eltham, has i been ncoepted for additions to Hawera } Police Station. : From a reliable source we (Wairarapa TimeE) learn that good work is being done at the Momohaki and Wairangi experimencal farms. In connection with the Easter holidays, the Takapuna (or other of the Union Company's steamers) will leave New Plymouth for Onehunga on Wednesday, April 3rd, ■ on arrival of mail train from Wellington. I The Post Office notifies that the minimum I rate of postage on printed papers to Western Australia is one penny per four ounces, j All book packets must be prepaid at this rate or they will be surcharged doable deficiency on arrival in that colony. r The excellence of the exhibits in hams and bacon shown at the Normanby Show was spoken of on ejery side, and went to prove that curers were thoroughly up to their work. The whole of the prize exhibits were purchased by Mr A. H. Parkinson, of Hawera, and it is needless to Bay are being eagerly sought after. In opening up the Timaru Harbour quarry, towards the further end of it, a few relics of an ancient native camp have been disinterred among the loose rooks, and from beneath three feet of soil (says the local Herald). There are a fairly well made greenstone adze head, a fiat piece of whalebone suoh as natives use for a dish before a fire to cook shellfish on, and a pawa shell. The greenstone tool never was a first-class one, as the stone is flawed from side to side near the cutting edge. The pawa shell is soft and brittle, indicating that it has been buried a long time. An exciting chopping contest took place in the yard attached to Sullivan's hotel, Eltham, on Wednesday, two local men, Sulzberger and Biley, who are well known in connection with chopping contests, being matched against each other for £5 a-side. The logs were pakutea, 2ft through, and the men started even. Excitement grew apace as the match proceeded, and Sulzberger was ultimately the winner by a few seconds, Biley only giving four cuts to separate his log after Sulzberger's went down. There were about 200 persons present, and the time occupied in the competition was 7min 22 2-sth see. From Opunake a proposal emanates to present a bill next session to form a harbour distriot and a harbour board for Opunake and district. In view of the unsatisfactory position respecting the liability to pay rates for the New Plymouth harbour, and the fear that any proposal made to raise or obtain a further large sum for expenditure at New Plymouth would fasten the rate over the whole district for all time, it seems it is contemplated that when the bill Lo constitute tile Opunake harbour district is before the House would be an excellent opportunity for clauses to be inserted to protect ratepayers from the injustice of any further rating liability towards New Plymouth harbour. With thiß end in view, the question arises, writes a correspondent, how far south and east ratepayers would like the new distriot to extend. Mr J. G. Datson, Manaia, has properties for sale. One trial will prove to you its superiority over all other washers. The clothes re-
quire no previous steeping or boiling, and the old laborious method of rubbing, sorub bing, and dollying is entirely dispensed with. By simply turning the wheel the washing is done. It is bo simplb that a girl of twelve can do a fortnight's washing in half a day. Sellers' Washers. Dixon and Bates.— Advt.
