At the meeting of the Colonial Mutual Life Society, the report congratulated the members on the satisfactory operations of the quinquennium, disclosing a surplus of £278,879. The investment fluctuation fund has been increased to £102,776, and a special reserve made to reduce the valuations to 3£ per cent., leaving £175,910 available as bonuses. Received October 25, 1.9 a.m.' Sydney, October 24. Mathieson, of St. Leonards, won the Queen's prize with a score of 264 ; Byron, of Wollongong, being second with 262. The Select Committee of Inquiry into military affairs met with a reverse at the hands of the military authorities. The latter, sheltering themselves behind the Queen's regulations, refused to state what quantity of ammunition and arms ' were stored in the colony. The committee recall them to-morrow, hinting at pains and penalties if they are then recalcitrant. Melbourne, October 24. All the Premiers agree to Mr MoLean's suggestion that the Imperial Government fix a day to be 'observed throughout the Empire to celebrate the j conclusion of the war. The nominations ' resulted as follows :— Twenty-seven returned unopposed, including all the Ministers except Mr Watt, PostmasterGeneral, ten Ministerialists, five Conservatives who support the Ministry, and 12 Liberals. Mandalay, Ootober 24. The party led by Dr. Jack, formerly Queensland geologist, into the interior of China at the time of the troubles commencing, has reached Burmah, having come through China in safety. Sydney, October 25. Four hundred and thirty Japanese laborers arrived under contract for the Noumea mines. A difficulty which arose about the landing, pending transhipment, was got over by locating them on Shark Island. It is stated that 500 more are coming to Sydney for transhipment. Albany, Ootober 25.
