ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
(PER PRSS ASSOCIATION.)
Westport, October 1.
When the Haupiri was off Rooks Point at 3.45 this morning the purser noticed a silver watch and chain, 19s 6d in silver, and some papers lying on the after-hatch. He found they belonged to Mr John Snowden, a saloon passenger bound from Nelson to Greymouth. Search for Snowden was unavailing, and it is supposed he committed suicide by jumping overboard. It is understood that Snowden was a brewer at Greymouth.
Dunedin, October 1.
An inquest was held touching the death of William Allen, who fell down the hold of the s.s. Waimate on Saturday, falling 35 feet. The evidence showed thai the deceased was climbing up a ladder from the hold, when he lost his hold. It was a cold day, and he had oilskins on. It is surmised he must have trod on his oilskin when near the top of the ladder. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, no blame being attachable to anyone.
