Fire Brigade Social.

There was a splendid attendance at the annual social in connection with . the Volunteer Fire Brigade, and the committee are to be complimented on the great success which attended their untiring efforts to bring the event to such a successful issue. The first part consisted of dancing, interspersed with Bongs by Miss Cowern, Mrs Labatt, Mr . Johnson, a Highland Fling dance by MissLoder (in costume), recitation by Mr Markham, and an Indian Club Swinging exhibition by Mr Wilson. ' Miss Cowern's solo was greatly appreciated, and she had to respond. Mrs Labatt scored a success in her solo " I was dreaming," and bowed her acknowledgements to a decided encore. Mr Johnson pleased the audience with a semi-comic song, and ( little Miss Loder's effort in the High- , land Fling was neatly accomplished. ' The club swinging by Mr Wilson was a i fine exhibition, and the best of the kind 1 seen in Hawera for a long time. Mr l Markham started off well in his recitation, but unfortunately forgot the latter , part. The musio supplied by Mr Wm. Wills was all that could be desired, which also may be said of the floor . for the dancing. The hall was taste- . fully decorated with firemen's accoutre- [ mentis, And the large flag of the brigade adorned the wall an the back of the hall ' gave the whole a pretty appearance. ■ The stage was arranged as a drawing ' room by furniture kindly lent by Mr J. E. Wilson. Coming to the supper, a . more tasteful spread could not be wished I for, and it was undoubtedly appreciated. , The committee (Messrs Saunders, Tilly, and Bigg) and the secretary (Mr ' t 3. Johnson) deserve special praise for the manner in whioh they conduoted i the whole affair. The Ladies' Committee, to whom not a little of the credit for success is due, especially in regard to the supper, were Mesdames Saunders, - Graham, and Gomer, and Miss Graham, t All went away fully satisfied with a i very pleasant evening's enjoyment. Miss Espagne and Mr Moore played the r accompaniments during the evening, and i the latter also contributed the music for i the extra dances. 3
