+ With this evening's Stab there is issued as an inset a report of Mr MoGuire's speech during the Budget Debate. The hon. member deals with a good many points of special concern to his constituents and no doubt the speech will be read with interest. The Chairman of the Chamber of Com' merce has received a letter from the District Traffic Manager, in which it is stated that a trial will be made of running an afternoon train from Hawera to Wanganui on Thursdays, leaving Hawera at 3.15 p.m, commencing from Ist December next. This is the date on which the new through service will be commenced. A letter from Mr Stowell on the " Malpractices of tohungas " and items entitled "After all," "Heredity in the lower animals," " Sweet revenge," •' Our isolation," and " Some English millionaires," will be found on fourth page ; also report of hunt at Stratford. Church appointments on fourth page. Titular names are quite common now-a-days. We know of one family that has in it an Earl and a Major, which has rather a distingue sound when used in the family circle. And down at Longburn, on the Wellington-Manawatu railway, there is a little Maori boy who rejoices in the name of Governor jPaki. Inspeotor Bindon was amazed the other day when he enquired the young blackamoor's name and was told that he was Governor. The exalted * cognomen was the Inspector's stock joke of the day, and whenever another boy baulked at a question he would mildly suggest that " Perhaps His Excellency can give us the answer." And generally little Paki was able to do credit to his stylish title. The Library Committee have placed aside for disposal about 600 volumes, mostly three-volume editions. Books will • be ready for issue this evening, and in future every evening from 7 to 9 p.m.

, j For some time past (says the Herald) the [ Napier polioe have been puzzled in trying to discover where certain prohibited persons obtained liquor in spite of the orders that have been issued by the Magistrate. The police; have been watching a certain locality, which has humorously become known as the " Hotel Metropole," where, 1 strange to Bay, a number of prohibited persons used nightly to congregate, but as this was a private place, a{ course, the police had to be oiroumspect in approaching the " nest-" On Tuesday night the i place was being closely watohed as usual, and a prohibited person was seen to emerge from the premises in a very drunken state. By the time that h« got into the main Btreet it was found necessary to convey him to the police station in % cab. The matter is to aired in the S.M. Court. At Okaiawa sale on Thursday afternoon some "larking' 1 was going on and a native offered to show how quiet a beast was by riding on it. He was given a " leg up " but went right over the animal and landed on the ground bo heavily that he sustained fracture of an arm. The Yen. Archdeacon Fancourt will preach at morning and evening service at St. Mary's to-morrow. On Monday evening a meeting of parishioners will be held in the school to consider a proposal for enlarging the Sunday school building. Many old friends of Dr O'Carroll will regret to hear that the genial dootor has had a serious attack of illness. However, by latest accounts he is improving somewhat. Booms have been engaged at the Commercial Hotel for Lord and Lady Banfurly and suite on the occasion of their visit to Hawera next week. Even the natives of Parihaka have gone in for a water supply. They run up water from a stream at the baok of the village to a reservoir capable of containing 10,000 gallons, and then distribute it in the 1 village. The Aorere leaves Wellington this afternoon. An enjoyable organ recital was given in St. Mary's Church last evening. The programme included two anthems, " Hearken Unto Me 1 " and '< The Badiant Morn, 1 ' and the choir also sang " The Heavens are Telling," this last rendered number being preceded by the recitative "In Splendour Bright," well sung by Mr Graves. The lovely bolo "As Pants the Hart," was given by Mrs F. J. Wrigley in excellent taste, choral accompaniment being given by Misses Chisholm and M. Brunette and Messrs Hooker and Page. The difficult trio, " Lift Thine Eyes," was sung by Miss Butler, Miss Bond and Miss Chisholm. Another good item was " He Shall Feed His Flook," sang by Mrs Swinburne. The instrumental music included two organ solos by Mrs Fairhall, " The War March of the Priests," and a selection from the Lobesang ; and a violin solo by Mr McClurg, "Aye Maria." Mr B. F. Page, the choirmaster, wielded the baton, and is to be congratulated on a satisfactory recital. The annual meeting of the Normanby Athletic Club will be held at Normanby this evening. It may not be generally known that Mr F. S. Cooper, the genial host of the Empire Hotel, Hawera, is an old athlete of note. In Wellington in 1877 he earned the proud record of being the amateur ohampion runner, also winning the same yea- a £50 handicap race, and 24 years ago he competed successfully in a pair-oared raoe at a regatta on the Wanganui Biver.
