Wellington licensing Committee.

(PBR PRESS ASSOCIATION.) I Wellington, September 2. - At the quarterly meeting to-day, a report was read from the police complaining of the alarm bell which is in use at the Banfurly Hotel. The report stated that on account of this means of signalling the police could not gain admittance to the hotel without the occupants being made aware of their approach. Mr Skerrett, who appeared for the licensee (Crossey), denied the jurisdiction of the Committee to go into the matter at a quarterly meeting. He deprecated hotelkeepers being harassed in this manner, and contended that the proper course would have been for the police to lay an information, . and attempt to prove their accusation. The bell bad been removed as soon as Mr Crossey knew it was objected to. Mr Kenny, S.M., said there was no application before the Committee with regard to the license, and he did not ' see that the Committee could do any- j thing ; at the same time, he thanked the police for making the report. |
