♦ WANGANUI v. TARANAKI. Heenan was the only other batsman to make runs, but before the last wicket fell Crawshaw had had time to carry his score to 174, and he remained not out after about five hours' magnificent batting. It was practically a faultless innings, only two very difficult chances to be set against it. None applauded him more heartily than the field. The bowling attack was well sustained, Walker coming out with a very good average ; and the fielding was generally excellent, the Marshalls, Caves, McLean and Francis — especially the last-men-tioned, who was sure and very true in his returns — repeatedly earning applause. Wanganui commenced their innings at a little after 4 o'clock, and the opening batsmen played a most cautious game against McCarthy and Gudgin, though the latter had no length and was bowling very much to leg. Off the first fourteen overs only eight runs were obtained. At 12 up McCarthy beat J. Marshall with a beautiful length ball. P. Marshall and H. B. Cave then gave a good deal of trouble, though they were missed two or three times in the field. At 77 up Haggett effected a separation, and A. Bayly then " yorked " P. Marshall, and K. H. Cave was the only other batsmen who did anything. Gudgin, who came on later in excellent form, got wiokets very quickly. At 6.15, when stumps were drawn, there were 9 wickets down for 136 runs. TO-DAY'S PLAY. The match was resumed at 9 a.m., and the innings soon closed. Scores : — Wanoanui.— lst Innings. Eev J. Marshall, b McCarthy ... 4 H. B. Cave, l.b.w. b Haggett ... 28 P. Marshall, b A. Marshall in his second over, but evidently the order of the day was " make a draw of it," as stumps were to be drawn at 11.45 to enable the visitors to get home by train, and J. Marshall and H. B. Cave played very steadily. At last G. Bayly dislodged H. B. Cave, and next ball Francis was cleverly taken by Pratt. Then more very slow play followed. Eventually there were seven wickets down when time was called. Eev, Marshall played a very safe innings, and having secured the draw hit out in the last few overs and brought up a good score. Taranaki played very keealy to get a victory this morning, bowling and fielding being really first-class. Pratt's catching of Francis was particularly smart, and the ground fielding of Pratt, Fowler, Buckley, and more or less of all the others repeatedly drew applause. Scores: — Second Innings. P.
