TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— We had a dumb advocate for prohibition at Normanby in the shape of a nice little dog clothed in a canvass rational dress, omitting divided skirt. The inscription on bis coat of no arms was strike out the top line, etc., but his tribe is not yet enfranchised. He has asked me to send you the result of the local option poll : — Total number polled 3388 Number required to carry reduction 1694 Number polled for reduction ... 1535 Three-fifths of number polled required to carry prohibition, omitting fractions, informal votes, and Mac's dog 2031 Number polled for prohibition ... 1799 Votes required in addition to those polled ... 232 Extremists who voted the entire animal of prohibition ... ..." 1799 True temperance men advocating reduction (this includes the sane and lucid phase of the top liners) 1535 Disciples of the dog's ancestor who grasped at the shadow 264 The whole hog or none ... ... 1799 Number required for reduction ... 1694 Majority for reduction had none been "silly enough to lose the substance ... ••• ••• 105 Mac's dog says he thinks that if all were temperate reduction would be carried easy, but neither party ever mentioned such a thing in his paper. Anyhow he's hungry after his canvass, real and metaphorical, coat and inscription, and if there is such a thing a3 a steak in the country he'd like one, for he saw little but skirt all day, and a surfeit of that will bring even a temperance dog to his bier. — I am, etc., Robin Studholme.
