(per press association.) GISBORNE, October 80. An attempt was made last night to burn down the Roseland Hotel, Makaraka. The fire was discovered by the proprietor in the nick of time, the flames having a strong hold of the froni door-way, and spreading rapidly. Several other suspicious fires have occurred at Makaraka recently in one of which two horses were burned to death in a stable. WELLINGTON, November 2. A man named James Brooker died at the hospital from the result of injuries received from a fall of earth on the relief works. Mrs Savers has been committed for trial at Masterton on a charge of performing an illegal operation upon a married woman. CHRISTCHURCH, November 2. The weather is intensely cold, it has been raining, hailing, and snowing at intervals since early morning, and shows no signs of clearing. There is a large influx of visitors expected for Carnival week.
