Wreck of the Dayspring.
THE MISSING BOAT ARRIVED SAFELY. (per press association.) BRISBANE Ootober 81. | The missing boat of the Mission steamer Dayspring has arrived safely. The men were much exhausted. November 1. After the boat capsized the Dayspring crew recovered se.veral tins of preserved meat and a beaker of water. After these were finished they subsisted for over a week on cocoanuts, dried birds, and brackish water. When the Dayspring's boat capsized in mid-ocean the crew lost all their provisions and fresh water. November 2. The Dayspring boat first struck a barren island in the Chesterfield Group. She then made for Long Island, which was reached on October 28rd. The sea at the landing place was infested with sharks, which swarmed round the boat and savagely snapped at the oars. The man landed and got a supply of water from tanks at the old whaling stations, and also found plenty of turtle's eggs, and obtained a fresh supply of cocoanuts and killed turtle. They stayed on the island four days, recruiting themselves. The remainder of the voyage was without noteworthy incident. The successful issue of the voyage is remarkable, considering that Carmichael had no charts and had lost the sextant and map when the boat capsized.
