Further particulars of the Alexander Newton show that the vessel was leaking freely before she struck. The men were exhausted with work at the pumps. The wonder is that more lives were not lost.' The vessel struck on a rocky reef, about 200 yards from the beach of the island, and was reduced to matchwood in a very short time ; and Capt. Harwood met a sad death. He was at the wheel when the vessel struck. A sea lifted him from the vheel and dashed him against the deckhouse, and another sea. caught him and hurled .him back on the companumwav. He was. seen to be bleeding. The waves then washed him overboard. •'. . . An enquiry into the wreck is proceeding at the Customs. ... SYDNEY, June 22. Barque Alexander Newton was insured for £1500, the amount being divided between the South British and the two local offices.
