POLITICAL.
To the Editor of the Star.
Sis.,— l was greatly pleased at your giving your readers the benefit of the views of Mr Scobie Mackenzie, M.H.8., on the present prosperity of tbe colony ; the chief feature, exports, being larger than the imports, we bad spent less than we bad made. I wish to point oat that this change has obtained during the time when those working the Government oracle were very busy relieving the towns of taxation and increasing the burdens on the produoers. Tbis should, I think, be quite interesting to those socialists who believe in loading np a class co tbat another class might be able to trot along comfortably. This, of course, means increased burdens on the producers and giving increased prosperity to tbe towns. Lop-sided socialists, I daresay, will not C9re to see ie this way. However, all know the value of faetß. Two and a half millions kept out of the bands of the towns will help to pay increased taxes as well aa interest charged by the frightening if money bag owners, so mischievously induced by the high priest of Government finoodling, thus marring tbe splendid outcome of tbe development cf tbe country. There is a matter of history id connection with Yiotoria tbat might perhaps be referred to just now with advantage. It is tbis : When Ministers of the Crown in that colony had been crowing in their speeches that they bad got their band on tbe throat of capital tbe colony go 5 invested with tbe Kelly gang spirit. From recent events we seem to be in for a similar experienoe. Before dosing this letter I want to give the Premier a reoom* mendation through your kindness. This may be rnsbing in where angels fear to tread ; but if I am kilt entirely lam only kilt, so, with your favour, I strongly recommend our Premier before going further with his half-bred Salvation Army tactics to rend and carefully study President Cleveland's installation address, especially those parts which deal with tbe pension lists and paternal legislation. — I am, &c, Clodhopper,
