WAI&ATE&OAD BOARD BALANCESHEET.
To the Editor of the Star. m • ' Sir.— The balance-sheet of tha Waimate . Roaa Board, as published in your Saturday's issue, is strange readiDg. The departmental expenses are put down at £331 7s 83, while the amount expended on roads totals only £187 11s 3d. In tbis 4 latter I inolnde £40, probable cost of material out of the item, " purchase of plant ana material, £62 2s 4a." There ia a large surplus oi nearly £900. These figures mean that for every £1 expended on roads there has been £2 8b spent in " departmental expenses. I have had the idea tbat a road board existed for the purpose of making and maintaining roadr, but clearly I wbb in error, as it is now abundantly manifest that its functions are to provide salaries for offioials and to buiia up a large credit balance at the bank. On all sides are beard complaints of the state of tbe roade. If a setllej^ire for expenditure onj^jcofta-fre IB Anally met wijyLlli^nrtr^xpreßsion " no funds," and- inline while money is accumulating Ho the oredit oi the board in the coffers of some bank.— l am, &c, J. W. Kenah. Eltham, May 13.
