NORMANBY.

TOWN BOARD.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

The regular monthly meeting of the Town Board was held on Monday evening last. Present — Messrs Wilson (chairman), Meredith, Sisley, and Rowe.

A telegram was received from Mrs Ballauce, thankiDg the Board for telegram of sympathy.

Letter from Mr J. Boddie, chairman of School Committee, applying for money in bands of board (£5 18s lid), as the money was required to purchase books for tbe school. — The clerk was instructed to write to Mr Boddie, and inform him tbat tbe money was intended to form tbe nuolens of a library, not to purchase books for the school; and upon those conditions tbe money wonld be paid over.

The clerk stated that tbe constable had complained that persons made tbe excuse that they did not know who was to receive the dog tax, and the clerk was instructed to insert a notice in the Stab that the tax was payable to Constable Brown.

Re the damage done to Mr Gane's fenoe by a falling tree, tbe Clerk stated tbat the foreman of works bad reported tbat the tree complained of had not been blown down by the gale, bat tbat it bad been cat down. Under these circamstanoes, it was decided that the clerk write to Mr Gane and inform him tbat the board do not consider themselves liable.

The Chairman etated that Che cotfntv road through the township required to be regravelled, and thought it would be advisable to do tbe work, say ten chains at a time. The majority of the board were against regravelling the road. The county had thrust tbe road into the board against the wish of the board, and the amount of tbe county rate for the next two years had already been expended on the road and it would be an injustice to the ratepayers to take their money ' to keep the county road in repair. The Clerk reported that tbe receipts for the Town Hall for tbe year bad totalled £25 12s 6d, and the expenditure £16 8s 2d, leaving a oredit balance of £9 4s 4d for the year. Tbe expenditure included tb9 item of lamps (£7 odd) and salary of caretaker.

Accounts were passed as follows :■>— Doherty, £5 17s; Hayward, £25 17s (sabjeet to his finishing his contraot to the satisfaction o! tbe engineer),

Mr Speight took possession of tbe Imperial Hotel yesterday, and Mr Gwynne with his family is now located in " Beresford's store."

I have been asked to draw attention to the fact that daring Mrs Brookes' absence from her residence for' about a week someone went on to tbe property and pulled up some of the shrubs and broke one of the windows. This could only be done in a spirit of pure mischief.

I hear that Mrs Brookes bas disposed of her property to a Mr Cooper of Inglewood, wbo intends starting a timber yard at Normanby, in conjunction witb bis mill at Ingle wood.

The only break in tbe monotony is the rink twice a week. I did bear that an entertainment was to be given on the 24th in opposition to the Dramatic Society. If so, the promoters are keeping it very quiet and mean to take us by surprise at tbe last moment.

The old extension station bas been shifted bodily to Hawera, thus ends tbe fight of years gone by of the Normanby railway station site. Well, the persons who fought for tbe present site of the Normanby station should fight nnrtfl n^orfl .aqiT than die, '.for Without doubt tbe Normanby station is tbe most inconvenient of any on the line, and at the present time is most dilapidated. Some time ago I drew attention to the platform wanting repair, and it still requires it.
