NEWS AND NOTES.

Football notes appear on fourth page. Lebel, Nordenfeldt — Palchra, Mr. J. Goodwin's new purchase, will be on view at Wilson's stables to-morrow. \ A private letter received in Hawera indicates that the Eev. A. McLean, for some time Presbyterian pastor in this town, is doing well, in his new field of labor at Washington, U.S.A. Mr. and Mrs Mclean have a pleasant home, and the pastor's labor is in the midst of a symp&thio flock. The return match between the Hawera Mounted Eifleß and Manaia Eifle Club will take place on the Hawera range on Saturday next, at 1 o'clock. Hawera will be represented by — Captain Johnston, Sergt. -Major Trott, Sergeant Lucena, Corpl. H. Linn, Corpl. A. Eobertson, Jrooper Hicks, Trooper F. G. Baker. Emergency : Trooper J. Bnohanan. The Waikato Times says :— " We learn that Mr Glenny, the Cambridge stationmaster, has received notice that be will shortly be moved to Patea. Mr Glenny will leave a large number of friends behind him, for during his stay in Cambridge be has made many. We most heartily wish Mr Glenny and his family every success in his new sphere of life, and trust the change means promotion." Mr M. J. Cleary has we understand, received orders to proceed from Putea to Cambridge. Mr G. A. Marchant, who, some months ago, was appointed ranger under the Taranaki Education Reserves Board, is now on his first visit ot inspection of the various reserves administered by the Board. The reason of the appointment lay m the fact that the Board has a large number of small properties scattered over the whole province let under all sorts of conditions, and that it had no meanß of ascertaining how far the conditions were being observed, or in what state the properties were. Mr. Marchant, with his long practical experience in farming, and from his general knowledge of the district, is certain to make a very satisfactory officer, and the appointment is one which should result iv great advantage to the land which tbe Board haß to administer. Tbe Wellington Post reports that as a party of boys were proceeding on the top of a tram to Wellington College after the electric lights had been lit, one of them, Master G. C. P. Tripe, playfully reached up and caught the lowest wire* at the corner of Courtenavplace . and Kent-terrace. This proved to be the electric light wire, with tho current full on. Master Tripe found Ite 'could not release his grasp, and he was dragged along the top of the car, two other College boys who hang on to him finally succeeding in tearing him from the wire. His hand was badly lacerated and burned. Fortunately only one had been used. Had both hands grasped the wire the result would probably have been fatal. As it was tbe two boya who recovered their comrade received a severe shock themselves in the' process. It is a common custom for passengers, especially boys, riding on the top of tbe high tramcars, to grasp at these •wires, and when the current is not on in the daytime no ill results follow, but the danger of grasping them at night has now been very clearly illustrated. Tbe fourth anniversary ot the Okaiawa Sunday School (a correspondent writes) was held on Sunday, the 12th met;., yyhen sermons were preached in the morning and afternoon. In tbe absence of Eev. W. Canne'll, who could not leave his Ngaire appointment in the morning, Mr. Blackball took the servioe and gave a very profitable addresß from Ecclesiaßtes xii., 1., but tbe attendance was very meagre. In tbe afternoon the Eev. W. Cannell preaobed to an average congregation. The singing by the children gave great satisfaction, especially in the morning. Tbe children attended well at both services and over filled the platform, and the collections wore a little in advance of last year. There were two things against the success of tbe anniversary : one was the imperfect advertisement, aad the other was the previous stormy weather swelling the streams and breaking down bridges, thus preventing many from coming who would otherwise have been present. Tbe picnic was held on Saturday last, when over sixty scholars, teachers and friends spent a very eojoyable day at the Waingongoro beach. There are 6even teachers (all members of the church) and 40 scholars on the roll, inoluding the young ladies' Bible class. It has been remarked by an outsider that Okaiawa has the best organised Sunday school on the coast, A meeting of Hawera School Committee was held on Wednesday evening, present — Messrs Martin, Jackson, Branette, Whittington, Fairs, and Parkinson (Chairman). The correspondence inoluded a number of letters and telegrams on the subject of the staffing of the school, temporary arrangements beiucr necessary, owing to the illness of two teachers, and the resignation of Master Walter Hill as cadet. Mr. Matheson nutified to the committee that he had sent in his resignation to the Board, and the committee expressed regret that his bad health should have necessitated this step, and decided that a letter be written expressive of its appreciation of his services during the last four years. It was reported that Miss Kcclesfield would probably resume work in a week ; and it was decided to request the Board to appoint Miss Bartlett cadet. A letter * was read from a parent, complaining that a child of his had been subjected to severe corporal punishment by one of the subordinate teachers, and also a report by the headmaster on the subject, admitting the fact, and setting out the teacher's explanation, which was that the punishment was of the mildest description. Mr Harrison added that the teacher was ordinarily most careful. It was resolved to accept the explanation ; but tbe feeling of the oommittee was that the regulation which prohibited the infliction of corporal punishment except by the headmaster should be strictly observed. Ifc was decided to ask Mr TV. A. Nairn to act as auditor. In tbe election the vote of the committee waß aiven to Meßsrs Bridge, Notman, and Pirani. Several accounts were passed for payment.
