Governor Glasgow subscribed £25 to the Queensland relief iund. Mr Richard Dingle has been appointed a ranger under tbe Forests Preservation Act.

Berkett, at Normanby. On account of the youth of Teakatai, and the steps taken by his father to make restitution, tbe Bench administered a severe caution to him, and inflicted a fine of Is and costs. Tonga's case was further remanded till Friday.

Our Ngaire correspondent writes : — We bad a dance ia the hall on Thursday evening — a good one, too, considering that the gala we bave seen so much about ! came that night. Tbe attendance waR not very large, but a fair number braved the fury of the elements 011 that atrocious night, and were, they t-ay, amply repaid for all the discomfort, including the drenching on the way home. Music wa s provided by tbp ladies, Mrs. Sinclair kindly lending her piano. Mr. Corkil acted as M.C., and gave entire satisfaction. The supper was first rate, also giving entire satisfaction. In fact everything gave satisfaction — except the weather. A meeting of the General Committee of the Egmont A. and P. Association will be held on Saturday next. There was no meeting of tbe Borough Council last ©yening, owing to tbe absence of a quorum. The meeting was adjourned till tomorrow evening. The Hawera Mounted Rifles will begin their annual six days' training on 13 tb March. There are several vacancies in the troop, so that persons desirous of joining should at once apply to tbe authorities. The fact that Mr. Palmer is with tbe company which appears in tbe Town Hall on Tuesday next will cause people to remember tbe treat he gave in "Mv Sweetheart"" and " Hans, the Boatman," and the excellent company he brought to delight them in "Aunt Lucinda," and they may with confidence expect another genuinely pleasant evening's entertainment. The company is highly spoken of wherever it has been. The Star Club play a match Smokers v. Non-smokers next Saturday, commencing at 1.30 sharp. The teams will be as follow: — Smokers: Parkinson, Lucena (2), Tucker, Moran, J. Syme, McLachlan, Westenra, Rowe, Noble, and Chisholm. Non-smokers : Southey. G. On Wednesday evening Mr. Tennyson Smith reoited another of Gough's orations before a good audience. Mr. McFarland occupied the chair ; and tbe choir rendered hymns as intervals. The recital was splendidly given, and Mr. Tennyson Smith was heartily applauded. At the conclusion, a number of persons went forward and signed tbe pledge. Special interest will doubtless be very generally felt in the subject chosen by Mr. Tennyson Smith for his lecture tonight, viz: "Is prohibition right?" more especially as he invites discussion, and challenges tbe opponents of prohibition to state their objections to it and formulate some alternative plan for preventing the admitted evils of the liquor traffic Mr. Tennyson Smith will also give his dramatic representation of the " tug-of-war " between prohibition and the liquor traffic at the conclusion of bis lecture. His Worship the Mayor will preside. Tomorrow (Friday) nigho is the last night and the special night of the series — " The trial of a notorious criminal (alcohol)." Mr. Tennyson Smith appears as counsel for prosecution, acd, we understand, a jury will be empanelled to try tbe prisoner.
