The Star. (PUBLISHED DAILY.) WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1893. THE WAITARA SHIPPING QUESTION.
The note in another column from our Waitara correspondent puts upon tbe Shaw-Saville Company the blame of the recent non-shipment at Waitara of wool sent there to be shipped. We can only hope tbat tbe agents of the company will be duly impressed with (he check tbat this breakdown in arrangements in potting upon the trade of the port of Waitara, because we know that it is having, and is likely to have, this effect. Just as one instance, we can state that a consignment, which was intended for Waitara, has this week been diverted to Wellington, for no other reason than tbe occurrence of last week, and despite tbe fact tbat it would, as regards freight and charges, have been been better and cheaper to send it to Waitara. Tbe explanation that tbe wool to be sent by next steamer will arrive Home in time for the same Bale as wool sent by tbe last steamer does not meet tbe caße. Financial arrangements of various kinds are made on tbe basis of earließt shipment, and when produce is not shipped at tbe date expected tbe result' is to throw those arrangements out oi gear. No matter who suffers at first the loss ultimately falls on the producer in the way of restrictions to cover uncertainty, for certainty of arrangements being carried out means more than even a little saving in storage, if there be such to put to tbe credit of the breakdown. We write as much in tbe interests of tbe port of Waitara as in any interest. At tbe beginning of tbe season great inducements were offered for
trade, and now that the trade has been given there is a difficulty which shakes confidence. The moral is that tbe shipping companies mast be taught to realise that they must prove themselves dependable.
