Tbe United States railway companies have decided to discharge all Unionist porters. Uneasiness over the silver question is increasing in New York, and there is now a general demand for the repeal of the Sherman Act. CALCUTTA, January 10. Owing to the aggressive atticude of the Afghans, Colonel Turner and a force of British troops have occupied the villages in a strong position at the mouth of the Kuram Valley. SYDNEY, January 11. In the Legislative Assembly to-day tbe Government obtained permission to withdraw their estimates in order to exercise more extensive and severe retrenchment, in consequence of the discovery of a deficit in last month's accounts. The estimates will sho rtly be submitted to the House, in amended form. MELBOUBNE, January 11. The hearing of the charge against officials of the Mercantile Bank of Australia was opened to-day, but was adjourned until Bth Marob, to permit of the arrival of Mr. F. Milledge, late manager of the institution from London.
