The statement that the Irish police are being disarmed is officially denied. It ib reported thai Mr. Gladstone proposes to reduce tbe Irish under Home Rule from l-sth to l-18tb, on oondition that 82 members only are elected to the House of Commons.
WASHINGTON, January 5.
The United States delegates to tbe Monetary Conference at Brussels have resigned, so as to allow President-elect Cleveland a free hand in dealing with tbe silver question.
VIENNA, January 5.
The railway traffic between Vienna and Budapesth has been stopped by heavy snowstorms.
Nine thousand of tbe miners who went out on strike on Saarbruok bave resumed work.
PARIS, January 5.
It is expected that Mt Cambou, French Ambassador in Madrid, will sucoeed M. Waddington as Ambassador in London.
MELBOURNE, January 5.
Influenza is again very prevalent and a large number of postal and telegraph officials bave been attacked. Dr. Eressell predicts a return of cholera epidemic on tbe Continent, and advises the board of health to continue precautions.
