BOROUGH COUNCIL.
\ The ordinary monthly meeting of tbe , counoil was held on Wednesday evening. Present — The Mayor, Councillors Winkr, I Whit ting ton, Adamson, Caplen, Wilson, , and later Finiay and Hood. CORRESPONDENCE. [ Secretary Hawera Library and Institute [ Committee requesting reply to resolution . previously forwarded intimating that the t state of the committee's finance might . necessitate the closing of the reading room ( in the evening. An increased subsidy was asked for. . Councillor Winks thought tbe counoil i would not be justified in granting more than the £25 now voted, and moved \ that the request could noc be complied , with. t Councillor Adamson seconded. , The Mayor thought that for the sake of j another £5 a year it would be well to keep j the reading room open at night. I Councillor Winks held that the people who went there and used the room should make up the £5. Councillor Wilson agreed with the Mayor, and moved that another £5 be granted. Tbe Mayor seconded. Councillors Wbittington and Caplen could not consent to any farther sum being granted. On several ocoasions the amount had been raised, and there waa no guarantee that £30 would be sufficient. r After a little further talk it was resolved that the matter be heli over until next ■ meeting, and Councillors Winks, Wilson, 1 and Whittington were appointed an s institute committee, it being understood they would report on the question. Circular from Municipal Association asking Conncil to affiliate, annual sub* 1 soription £2 2s. —Counoil declined to join , at present time. , D. Spence, Inspector of Nuisances, stating tbat be could not afford to do bis ' work for a year, as tbe duties took up • more of bis time than he had anticipated, i and asking the counoil to consider the 1 matter. — Held over. Several letters on the hospital matter were laid on the table, but consideration 1 of the matter was postponed. ACCOUNTS. I The following passed for payment :— Gnnn, surfaceman, £9 2s ; A'Coart, horse and cart hire, £B \ Wallace, kerbing, £4 10s; J. Parkin, kerbing, £5 4s; Brigbt1 well, nails, &c, £3 3s 4d; S. Dixon, f painting and writing, £7 12s. The clerk said ths cost of kerbing under tbe day work system was 12s 4d a chain. 1 INSPECTOR OF NUISANCES. The clerk reported and drew attention to tbe fact that the Inspector of Nuisances stated tbat sanitary matters remained in the same state as last month. FOOTBALL GROUND. Councillor Wilson, on behalf of foot* bailers, asked what kind of fenoe they were required to put np ? ; Matter referred to Recreation Ground Committee. CEMETERY. It was reported tbat there had been petty thefts of flowers and plants at the cemetery ; and the matter was referred to the Cemetery Committee to see what could be done. The caretaker offered, for another £5 a year, to give longer attendance in tbe cemetery, to look out for pilferers. TENDERS. Tenders were opened for removal of nightsoil : — T. H. Morgan, lOd per pan ; D. Spence, lid; A. Allibone, Is; J. Milford, 9d ; J. Bose, 8d (aooepted) ; J. Sharrock, from Gd weekly to Is 6d monthly. The oounoil adjourned.
