Serious Fire in a Coal Fit Shaft. ♦ (PER PEESS ASSOCIATION.) I BEUNNBRTON, November 2; Coal Fit Heath shaft is on fire. Shortly after four yesterday afternoon, clouds of black smoke were seen ascending tbe sbatt. At first the men could not realise SQcb was the case, but it was soon evident that the matter was serious. The men called out the mine engineer, and the mine manager went below and did all be oould to confine tbe fire. The flames were stopped and everything possible done to exclude the air from tbe bottom of the shaft. There being no engine here, tbe Greymouth one was sent for, and arrived, with a full staff of men, previous to seven o'clook. At 5.30 tbe wood-work on the top of the shaft took fire, and, to save the poppet-bead and buildings surrounding it, men with buckets were lined down the face of a sceep rook to the river, who passed up same filled. The great bulk of the residents are gathered bt the pit's mouth, and relief was felt when it was ascertained that all the men were safely out of tbe mine. The accident will throw a large body of men out of work, for it is expected that tbe pumps which ascend the shaft will be useless. So far as known at present, the fire is confined to tbe shaft and the bottom of same, Jjatest (8 p.m.) The brigade engine bad to be lowered down the precipitous bank to tbe river, and is now throwing water into tbe Bbaft. Tbe smoke is not bo dense, and at present is more like steam. The bucket- men have so far saved the buildings. WELLINGTON, November 3. A telegram pat in at Greymonth at midnight states tbat tbe fire in the coal pit Heath mine is confined to tbe bottom of tbe shaft. A steam fire engine is expeoted to extinguish the fire shortly. Tbe damage is only trifling, and oan be repaired in a few days. Too much praise cannot be given to tbe firemen and all concerned with the engine.
